What is the validity of Schengen visa? How long can I stay in the Schengen area on the basis of my visa?

The precise length of validity of your Schengen visa is indicated on the visa sticker under the heading “Duration of visit”. Here’s how to read the Schengen visa sticker.

It could be issued for one, two or multiple entries but the period of validity shall not exceed five years. In any case, you can only stay for a duration of no more than 90 days in any 180 days period.

Example: You were granted a 1-year multiple entry visa. Once you’ve stayed in the Schengen area for a period of 90 days (or about three months), you have to exit the area or you’ll be overstaying. You can only come back to the Schengen area after 180 days from the date of your first entry.
